The painting entered the Brera from the Lechi collection in Brescia il 1829 but was originally painted for the Chapel of Saint Jerome in the church of San Francesco in Brescia. A leading member of a family of painters from Lodi, Callisto Piazza is recorded in Brescia between 1524 and 1529, his work during tha period being influenced by Romanino, Moretto, Dosso Dossi and Titian. He has signed the work “CALIXTUS LAUDENSIS” in a scroll next to the angel playing a lute, between a lamb symbolising Saint John the Baptist and a lion symbolising Saint Jerome.
