Fruit Seller

Vincenzo Campi

Against the backdrop of an imaginary landscape, a young woman is surrounded by baskets overflowing with fruit and vegetables, painted with a sharp eye for realism. This picture, acknowledged as one of the most important precedents for Italian still-life painting, is one of a group of four paintings whose subject matter, when taken together, has a symbolic significance and may identify the four elements, in which case this painting would identify Earth.
