Ecce Homo

Luca Giordano

A youthful work by Luca Giordano, a pupil of Ribera, this picture testifies to Luca’s interest in Venetian 16th century painting, which he discovered while staying in Venice. Crowded and dramatic with its emphatically contrasting play of light, the composition in the picture, clearly a sketch or study, is inspired, albeit very freely, by a woodcut of the same subject in Albrecht Dürer’s (1512–13) Large Passion series.
